Maintain a minimum of order during the summer
02 July, 2026
Lower Your Expectations
The first step to maintaining order during the summer is, paradoxically, to accept that there will be less of it. A house with children present all day, coming home from the beach, cooking snacks, taking out toys, and having friends over cannot look like a house during the school week. This is not a failure; it's the reality of summer.
Define in advance what is non-negotiable for you: maybe the kitchen must be clean before bed, shoes stay in the entryway, and bedrooms are tidied in the morning. Everything else can have more leeway. This clarity will prevent you from fighting against summer, and against your children!
Maintain a Few Simple Routines
Even a lightened, minimal daily structure helps maintain a certain order effortlessly. A few simple habits, repeated each day, make a big difference to the overall state of the house:
- An evening tidy-up: 10 minutes before dinner or bedtime when everyone puts away what belongs to them. Short, simple, and non-negotiable!
- A clean breakfast: the kitchen is tidied after breakfast before the day really begins.
- Beach or park items put away: sunscreen, towels, and swimsuits have a designated place as soon as you get home.
- Camp bags emptied every evening: to avoid accumulation and easily find what you need the next morning.
Involve the Children
Summer is the ideal season to increase children's contribution to household maintenance. With more available time and less academic pressure, responsibilities can naturally expand. The goal is not to turn summer into a work camp, but to ensure that every family member contributes to the space they live in.
Depending on their age, children can:
- Tidy their room every morning before starting the day
- Empty the dishwasher or set the table
- Sweep after meals
- Take care of outdoor tidying: toys, bikes, chalk
Moreover, a child who has participated in household maintenance since the beginning of summer does it much more naturally in September!
Simplify the Space to Simplify Tidying
One of the best-kept secrets of summer organization: the fewer accessible items there are, the less clutter there is to manage. If you haven't already, summer is a good time to remove some of the toys, books, and items that clutter the space, either by rotating them or by donating them.
Also simplify high-traffic areas: the entryway, kitchen, and bathroom. Fewer items on counters, fewer items in the entryway, less friction for everyone.
