10 ways to practice self-care in 15 minutes or less
19 February, 2026
Even if everyone tells you it's important to take care of yourself, do you struggle to find the time to do so between work, kids, meals, cleaning, homework, and everything else?
You probably don't have an hour for a relaxing candlelit bath or half a day at the spa, and that's okay!
Self-care can also be done in 15 minutes or less. Here are 10 concrete ways to recharge your batteries without disrupting your already busy schedule.
1. Really savor your coffee or tea break!
Not the coffee you gulp down standing between tasks. Not the one you drink while driving. Not the one you reheat three times in the microwave.
Real coffee, savored slowly.
Sit down. Turn off your phone (or put it out of sight). Drink slowly. Look out the window. Do nothing else!
These 10 minutes of true break allow your nervous system to calm down, and your brain to switch from "action" mode to "being" mode, simply!
2. The power nap
If you can isolate yourself for 15 minutes, we suggest you try a micro-nap!
How to do it:
- Set an alarm to wake you up in 15 minutes (no more, otherwise you'll enter deep sleep and probably wake up a little grumpy!).
- Close your eyes.
- Breathe deeply.
- Even if you don't actually sleep, resting your eyes and brain makes a real difference to your energy.
When: At lunchtime, during the children's nap, or even just before dinner if you're exhausted
3. A walk around the block
Go for a walk alone, without children, without your phone, and without a specific goal.
Walk at a normal pace and take the time to breathe the fresh air and observe your surroundings.
Fresh air, movement, and a change of environment do wonders for clearing the mind and reducing stress.
Tip: Schedule this moment in your Octave calendar as an important appointment, to make sure you don't miss it!
4. The "energy boost" playlist
Create a playlist of 3 or 4 songs that give you energy, make you happy, or just make you feel good.
Then turn up the volume and dance in your kitchen, sing your heart out, and most importantly, let loose! Music directly influences your mood and movement releases endorphins: the perfect combination for an instant energy boost!
5. The sensory shower
Why not transform your ordinary daily shower into a real sensory experience?
How:
- Get a soap or shower gel whose scent you particularly enjoy, specially designed for these special showers.
- Close your eyes and take the time to focus on your sensations: the warmth of the water, the smell of the soap, the texture of the foam.
- Let your thoughts evaporate with the steam!
6. A call to a friend
Skip the text or voicemail, and opt instead for a real phone call.
Call a friend who makes you feel good, ideally not to solve a problem or organize an outing. Just to chat!
Set a timer for 15 minutes if you tend to talk for a long time!
7. Express stretches
You don't need an hour of yoga to feel good. Even 5 minutes of stretching can make a huge difference!
Here's a simple routine to do:
- Stretch your neck (right, left, front, back).
- Roll your shoulders.
- Bend forward and touch your toes (or try to!).
- Open your chest by clasping your hands behind your back.
- Assume child's pose (kneeling, forehead to the ground, arms extended).
And don't forget to breathe deeply during each stretch.
8. Pleasure reading
Not an anxiety-inducing news article. Not the news. Not a self-help book you "should" read.
A book or magazine you read JUST for pleasure: a novel, a comic book, a home decor magazine, choose something you genuinely enjoy reading!
Set a timer for 10 or 15 minutes: when the time is up, mark your page and simply continue with your day.
9. The gratitude list
Get out a piece of paper or open your phone's notes, and write down 5 things you're grateful for today.
It doesn't matter if they're big (health, for example) or small (morning coffee or the shining sun), gratitude allows your brain to focus more on the positive rather than problems.
10. The 4-7-8 breathing technique
Try this ultra-simple breathing technique that instantly calms the nervous system.
How to do it:
- Inhale through your nose while counting to 4.
- Hold your breath while counting to 7.
- Exhale through your mouth while counting to 8.
- Repeat 4 to 5 times.
When to use it: When you're stressed, anxious, or can't fall asleep at night.
The secret: Regularity over perfection
What truly makes a difference in daily life isn't taking two hours for yourself once a month, but taking a few minutes regularly. Consistency is key to feeling better!
How to integrate these breaks into your already busy life?
1. Plan it. Block these moments in your calendar and treat this appointment with yourself as you would a medical appointment: non-negotiable!
2. Take advantage of "downtime."
- During children's nap time
- 15 minutes before everyone wakes up in the morning
- During lunchtime
- While the children play outside
- While dinner is in the oven
3. Alternate according to your needs. Some days, you might need to move, while on others, you might need calm. Listen to what your body and mind are asking for.
4. Ask for help! Don't hesitate to ask your partner or someone in your entourage to take care of the children to allow you these precious one-on-one moments with yourself!
Why it's important
You may feel that 15 minutes won't change anything, that it's not enough and that you should do more to truly take care of yourself. However, all these small accumulated moments make a huge difference to:
- Your stress level
- Your patience with your children
- Your daily energy
- Your mental health
- Your ability to handle unforeseen events
