Digital Minimalism: Tips and Tricks to Simplify Your Online Life

04 January, 2024 • Par Natacha Langlois

When you hear about minimalism, you probably think of uncluttered living spaces and a limited number of objects in the environment. But what if we told you that your digital life is also cluttered with unnecessary things that increase your mental load and often waste your precious time ? Although invisible, the impact of digital clutter is very tangible, both from a personal and environmental point of view, which is why we offer you in this article some tips for effective digital decluttering .

Email boxes

How many email addresses do you have? How many emails do you receive per day and how many of these often remain unread? In order to regain control of your email inbox, a good cleaning is surely necessary!

  • First, make sure to consolidate all of your email boxes into a single application to reduce the time spent checking your messages and, above all, to avoid missing an important message.
  • Take a moment to unsubscribe from any newsletters you no longer wish to receive , and be sure to uncheck the "Subscribe to newsletter" box the next time you provide your email address when registering for a website.
  • Finally, sort your emails into folders where you can archive messages that you may need to access again (trip, event, online order, etc.).

Social media

How much time do you spend on social media each day? Who do you follow and why? Take a moment to analyze it all to avoid distractions and unnecessary time wasters.

  • To avoid wasting valuable time surfing from one social network to another, limit the number of platforms you are signed up to to two or three . Choose your favorites and delete the others.
  • Take the time to unfollow any accounts that aren't relevant to you so that their posts don't unnecessarily invade your news feed.

The news

Because it is so easy to access continuous news these days, it is important to set limits and better focus our research to ensure that we are not only well informed, but also do not feel overloaded by the news.

  • Set aside just one time each day to check the news , ideally on reputable sites rather than through your social media.
  • Choose just one news site or group several sources on one page to avoid taking the time to go to each of the news sites you usually visit.

The smart phone

Even though it is very practical on a daily basis, the smartphone can quickly become cumbersome, especially when you automatically consult it several times a day. Here are some tips to adopt in order to free yourself up more.

  • Delete unnecessary notifications from your phone, so that you are not constantly disturbed, more often than not, by information that is not really useful to you.
  • Ideally, remove apps that waste your time and/or seem addictive, so you can spend less of your precious time on your phone.
