Family Cooking: A Guide to Small Tasks to Assign to Children

There’s no denying that cooking with your children is not only a great way to spend quality time together as a family, but also a way to teach them essential cooking skills, develop their curiosity about new foods, learn organizational skills and improve their fine motor skills. Not sure where to start or what tasks to assign them based on their age? Here are a few suggestions, which can of course be adapted to your child’s very own level of development:

2-3 years:

  • Pour liquid into a measuring cup
  • Spread soft spread with a knife
  • Start the coffee machine
  • Putting toast in the toaster
  • Stirring a muffin or cake mix
  • Cut soft foods, with a suitable knife
  • Decorating cookies or cupcakes
  • Shred the lettuce
  • Toss a salad

4-5 years:

  • Make a bowl of cereal or a simple breakfast
  • Prepare a sandwich or toast
  • Wash fruits and vegetables
  • Break and beat eggs
  • Putting together the elements of a perfect
  • Shape into balls, cookies or patties
  • Topping a pizza
  • Grease the baking dishes
  • Squeeze a lemon
  • Roll out the dough with a rolling pin

6 to 8 years:

  • Putting together a complete lunch
  • Cooking an Omelette (with supervision)
  • Make muffins (with supervision)
  • Measuring the ingredients of a recipe
  • Use a stirrer or can opener (with assistance)
  • Use the oven and microwave (with supervision)

9 years and older:

  • Peeling a hard-boiled egg
  • Prepare a lunch from A to Z
  • Prepare simple recipes in full
